If you have spent any amount of time in the world of VPNs and proxies, you have surely heard the name Xray. Many modern client apps use it behind the scenes. But what exactly is this core, and what does it actually do?

Xray-core in one sentence

Xray-core is an open-source platform for building network proxies and tunnels. The project forked from the V2Ray codebase and has been developed with a focus on better performance and new capabilities.

What does "core" mean?

The core is the main engine that establishes the connection: it takes packets, encapsulates them according to the protocol, encrypts them and routes them. The app you see on your phone or computer is usually just a user interface on top of a core.

What can it do?

  • Support for multiple protocols: such as VLESS, VMess, Trojan and Shadowsocks
  • Different transports: such as TCP, WebSocket, gRPC and other methods
  • Modern security layers: including TLS and technologies such as XTLS/REALITY
  • Flexible routing: you can decide which traffic goes through which path.
  • JSON configuration: high flexibility for advanced users

Why does it matter?

  1. Flexibility: one core, dozens of protocol and transport combinations
  2. An active community: the project is open source and is updated continuously.
  3. Compatibility: many mobile and desktop clients support it.

An important note for users

Having a powerful core is not enough on its own. The real quality of your experience depends on these things:

  • The quality of the server and network behind it
  • Correct configuration of the server
  • The privacy policy of the provider
  • Support for when something does not work

What should I do in practice?

If you want to work with Xray-based configurations, ask the provider before buying which protocols and clients are supported. The BlendIn VPN support team is available 24 hours a day, and you can ask about compatibility with your needs before you buy.
